Santa Quiteria

Santa Quiteria ( Punitha Kitheriammal in Tamil language) is almost an unknown saint in the Indian sub-continent. She is not much known as popular Saints such as St. Anthony of Padua, St. Francis Xavier, St. Thomas, the Apostle, St.Philomina, Our Lady of Lourdes, Fatima and Veilankanni., St Joseph etc. Santa Quiteria is a well-known saint in the countries like Portugal, Spain, France, Italy and in some countries (Latin America) colonized by Spanish and Portuguese. Many shrines, chapels and basilicas in her name are located in many places in those countries. In her name there are lot of colleges, schools and educational institutions even hotels, lodgings and as well as towns and villages.


Manakkarai is a small village situated in Srivaikundam Taluk of Tuticorin district in the State of Tamilnadu, India. It is in the verge of the southern slope of Vallanadu Hills. River Thamirabarani flows in the west of the village. Fertile rice fields are in the south and a barren land with bushes extends in the east. Manakkarai is a substation of the parish of Christ the king - Jesurajapuram, Sethuramalingapuram of Tuticorin (Thoothukudi) Diocese.
